Pandemics are scary, it challenges health care systems, tests governments and politicians, and hits the economy.
You know what else is scary? Growing antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
India is “AMR Capital of the world.”
Antibiotics are sold as over the counter (OTC) drugs. Pharmacists usually do not ask for prescriptions or questions regarding symptoms of illness.
Antibiotics are often prescribed for “consumer satisfaction.”
Overprescription of antibiotics for upper respiratory tract infections (which FYI, are mostly viral)
Lack of stewardship
These are just a few of many reasons. Looking at the bleak future of Antibiotics, it is crucial to initiate dialogue and advocacy. Because we might be looking at the NEXT big thing.
